About us
Organisation of the VDSEE
Our Doctoral School is built around a close collaboration between its key bodies.
The Management team takes care of the day-to-day organization and serves as the main point of contact for PhD candidates. The Steering Committee brings together faculty members and student representatives to guide administrative processes and shape the School’s strategic direction. An External Scientific Advisory Board of international experts accompanies the Doctoral School, offering independent advice and constructive feedback to support high-quality training and continuous development.
-
Management
Management oversees all organizational, administrative, and financial operations of the Doctoral School, including conferences, calls, reporting, and coordination with university units. It serves as the central contact point for PhD candidates on all matters relating to their doctoral studies.
-
Steering Committee (SC)
The Steering Committee, led by the Head and Vice Head, supports the Management in the strategic and administrative decisions of the Doctoral School. Composed of faculty members and student representatives, it oversees admissions, budgeting, reporting, events, and long-term development, and also serves as the Studienkonferenz of DSPL55.
-
Scientific Advisory Board (SAB)
The external Scientific Advisory Board provides independent advice on management, quality assurance, and strategic processes of the Doctoral School. Composed of international experts in ecology and evolution, it annually reviews progress and training quality and reports its recommendations to the Steering Committee.
Governance
-
- We strive for consensus on all votes in all bodies. If this is not possible, a simple majority will be used for votes. In case of absences, body members are entitled to vote, others can be authorized to vote by proxy.
- The Code of Good Practice for Doctoral Schools provides guidelines for good practice that are binding for all members of the Vienna Doctoral School of Ecology and Evolution. It includes the responsibilities of the directors, supervisors as well as the responsibilities of doctoral candidates.
- Pay attention to the rules of Good Scientific Practice! “Good scientific practice embraces all the procedures and practices that are necessary for planning, conducting and reporting research and scholarship within a framework of scientific integrity.” These can be reviewed in the European Science Foundation Policy Briefing 10 "Good Scientific Practice in Research and Scholarship", p. 5 (PDF).
