Research
The Vienna Doctoral School of Ecology and Evolution (VDSEE) fosters advanced interdisciplinary research and training in ecology and evolutionary biology. It brings together doctoral candidates working on the ecology, evolution, and interactions of extant and ancestral organisms, populations, and communities across scales — from gene regulation and development to ecosystem structure and function and responses to environmental change. VDSEE provides structured PhD supervision, a vibrant research community, funding opportunities, and activities including lecture series, retreats, and workshops that support scientific development and international competitiveness in research.
-
Evolutionary Anthropology
Evolutionary Anthropology is the study of the biological variation and evolution of humans, their ancestors and closely related species.
-
Evolutionary Biology
Evolutionary biology is the study of biological diversity over time, examining how evolutionary change arises at various levels of organisation, from genes to organisms.
-
Palaeontology
Palaeontology is the study of life on Earth through the fossil record, with a focus on how organisms and ecosystems developed and transformed over time.
-
Neuroscience and Developmental Biology
Neuroscience and Developmental Biology is the study of how nervous systems and organismal form emerge, develop and evolve, with a focus on how genes, cells and development shape structures and functions over time.
-
Botany and Biodiversity Research
Botany and biodiversity is the study of plant diversity, covering systematics, evolution, and plant interactions, to provide a comprehensive understanding of plant biodiversity.
-
Functional and Evolutionary Ecology
Functional and Evolutionary Ecology is the study of how organisms and ecosystems respond to change, including biodiversity, symbioses, metabolism and ecosystem functioning.
