VDSEE Symposium
Join us for the VDSEE Symposium 2027
We are excited to announce the 4th annual VDSEE Symposium on 19 February 2027!
This is an opportunity for members of our Doctoral School to share their latest research achievements with their peers and researchers from Ecology and Evolution.
Attendees can look forward to an engaging program of talks and poster presentations by PhD candidates of the VDSEE and two external keynote speakers.
The Symposium is open to all PhD-candidates, Postdocs, supervisors, Bachelor/Master students and everybody interested in the research of our Doctoral School. Both internal as well as external attendees are welcome.
Registration is free of charge!
Please note: Applications for oral presentations are only open for VDSEE PhD-candidates. External PhD-candidates are invited to apply with a poster.
Arts & Science pre-event
In the evening before the Symposium, on 18 February 2027, we're hosting an Arts&Science event at WUK!
Meet your colleagues for a drink and get inspired by the diversity of research at the VDSEE. We're inviting all VDSEE members to get creative and display their research in the form of paintings, drawings, photography, microscopy, sculptures, audio, video, text, etc. Collaborations are very welcome! There will be a goodie for all exhibitors.
Register now!
Deadline for Poster/Oral presentations: 13 January 2027
Abstract: Please use this template (download Word document)
Deadline for attendance only: 27 January 2027

Keynote speakers:
-
Marja Spierenburg
Affiliation: Universiteit Leiden
Marja Spierenburg is Professor in the Anthropology of Sustainable Development and Livelihoods at Leiden University (the Netherlands), and Research Fellow at Stellenbosch University South Africa. Her research focuses on the role of the private sector in nature conservation and land reforms in Southern and East Africa, and the impacts on local communities’ access to land and livelihood strategies. She has also published on the inclusion of local and indigenous knowledge in biodiversity and sustainability assessments. Marja Spierenburg is a member of the Water, Energy and Food Nexus Knowledge Action Network of Future Earth, and a member of UNESCO’s International Advisory Committee for Biosphere Reserves.

Ronny Lauerwald
Affiliation: University of Paris-Saclay
Ronny Lauerwald is an Earth system scientist and biogeochemist specializing in the role of inland waters in carbon and nutrient cycles, greenhouse gas budgets of inland waters, and land-surface modeling. His research explores the intersection of climate change, agronomy, and hydrology. He has done pioneering work on terrestrial-aquatic continuums, investigating how carbon and nutrients are laterally transported via river networks, and the role inland waters play in regional and global climate feedbacks. Using advanced numerical tools like the ORCHIDEE land surface model, his work simulates soil erosion, fluvial carbon transfers, and agricultural greenhouse gas dynamics to help predict environmental responses to global change.
We would like to thank our sponsors for supporting the symposium!
