Open PhD position (m/f/d) in Marine Microbial Ecology, University of Vienna
We are happy to share this open position for a PhD candidate (scientific project assistant predoctoral, 30 h/week, 3.5 years, start 1 February 2027) to study the activity and genomic adaptation of bacteria in the sea-surface microlayer of the Atlantic Ocean. You will combine monthly sampling in northern Germany together with partners at GEOMAR Kiel (first project year only), a research cruise on RV METEOR in 2028, single-cell activity assays (CARD-FISH, BONCAT, RSG) and metagenomics/metatranscriptomics (about 85% lab and field work, 15% bioinformatics).
The project VERA (Variability of Ecologically Relevant Bacterioneuston) is a collaboration with the University of Oldenburg, with enrolment in the Vienna Doctoral School of Ecology and Evolution.
We expect an MSc in marine biology, microbiology or a related field, laboratory and fluorescence microscopy experience, bioinformatics skills, English skills and team spirit.
Salary according to the University of Vienna collective agreement (praedoc, VwGr. B1): approximately EUR 2,832 gross per month at 2026 rates (30 h/week).
