Student Representatives

Marilena Heitger

"As a student representative I would like to address the topic of well being in academia and create a safe space where everybody feels seen and heard. I believe that we have to discuss difficulties openly to ensure good conditions for all of us."

Marilena is entering her 2nd year in the Microbial Oceanography group in the Department of Functional and Evolutionary Ecology. Her project focuses on microbial degradation of particles in the deep sea and how this influences the global carbon cycle.

Constanze Schattke

Since a PhD is rarely achieved alone, but with the help of a supportive network – be it private or professional – my focus as a student representative is to encourage and support interdisciplinary engagement among young (female) scholars, professors and disciplines.

Constanze is a PhD student at the Department of Anthropology, Natural History Museum Vienna and the VDSEE Vienna. She is researching the provenance of human remains originating from violent acquisition contexts, combining methods from bioarchaeology, osteology and archival history.

Daniel Martinovic Saavedra

As a student representative I would like to make sure that the available resources in the VDSEE are allocated with fairness and integrity, always in the best interest of our students.

Daniel is in his first year as an PhD student at the Fungal & Biogeochemical Oceanography Group - Department of Functional Ecology and Evolution. He is specialised in alkaline phosphatases involved in the marine phosphorus cycle.

Christian Pruckner

"I want to represent PhD students from the UBB, as well as those from other institutions, such as the Rennweg and the NHMW. I am committed to improving the connection between the different institutes and speaking for the needs of students of any background. Furthermore, I am interested in engaging in sustainable research, not only for the environment, but also for scientific employment."

Christian is entering his second year as a PhD student of the group of Pedro Frade at the Natural History Museum. He is researching the microbiome of cold-water corals and the potential of microbes to restore lost reef sites.
